Working in finance I appreciated that numbers didn’t lie; not the percentages mind you. Numbers were always so much easier to work with than people. By spending a couple of hours on a numerical issue I’d be reasonably certain it would be solved. That same couple of hours on a people issue might only be the tip of the iceberg.
There is beauty, for me, in balancing a set of financial statements – the intricacies that underpin the workings are wondrous. But the real beauty is in working with people – the intricacies that underpin our workings are wondrous too.
Our intricacies, our messiness, our uniqueness, is what makes us human and no one particular combination of inputs or formulae will ever generate the same result.
I have a no-nonsense, roll-my-sleeves-up approach to understanding and resolving problems no matter how intractable they might seem. In fact, I am energised by them. My experience, insights and business acumen stems from a wide variety of operational and financial roles. I am as good with people as I am with details. I’m resourceful, energetic, firm but fair…and I am fun.
For more than 20 years I've been working with teams in Europe, Africa, Asia, in-person and remotely. I have relieved tensions, addressed conflict, eased communications, helped establish clearer boundaries, empowered people to make and take decisions and align teams with organisational purpose. I'm a former Finance Director and a Director of Operations. I’ve worked and lived in Ireland, Australia, Uganda, Sudan, Kenya, UK and Switzerland.
I've studied topics as diverse as Mental Health First Aid, Coaching, Science of Well-Being, Brain & Behaviour, Social Impact Strategy, Effective Negotiation, Women’s Studies, Accountancy and more.
I am on the board of two NGOs.
